Editorial (ISJ 5, Summer 1979)

The editors have been acutely aware that in our first 4 issues we did not publish anything that was directly concerned with the British working class today. So we do not need to apologise for the length of Steve Jeffrey’s article in this issue.

Steve Jefferys: Striking into the 1980s modern British trade unionism: its limit and potential

By the end of 1974 the full effects of the world oil and currency crises and the related commodity speculation put the survival of British capital in anything like its 1960s condition into question. It was forced to act. Just two and half years later all the gains in workers’ real wages made between 1970 and 1974 had been wiped out; the social wage (public services and amenities) had been cut by a quarter.

Miguel Garcia: Karl Marx and the formation of the average rate of profit

Since von Bortkiewicz it has frequently been assumed that Marx’s solution to the ‘transformation problem’ is faulty. In this article we shall try to show: (a) that Marx’s solution was correct; (b) that it leads to no inconsistencies in his theory of value; (c) that even in spite of this solution, von Bortkiewicz misunderstood the problem.

A reply to Joan Smith: Women’s oppression and male alienation in ISJ2:3

Philip Spencer: The ‘left’ face of Eurocommunism

jun 79

It is becoming something of a cliche in the revolutionary left these days to analyse the phenomenon of Eurocommunism in terms of the Social Democratisation of the Communist Parties of the advanced capitalist countries.

Pete Goodwin: ‘Razor-sharp factional minds’ – the F.I. debates Kampuchea

Our party, the SWP, was born out of Trotskyism. We were conceived, in the Trotskyist movement of the late 1940s on the basis of our different analysis of Stalinist Russia and the other so-called socialist countries.

FK (Forbundet Kommunist, Sverige): Alternative production

We would like to draw the attention of readers, particularly in Britain, to the article on Alternative Production. Apart from in a few isolated exceptions – such as the alternative proposals of the Lucas stewards’ Combine Committee – the question has not yet become a central one on the Left in this country. But if the indications of Sweden, Italy and Denmark are anything to go by, it could well become one shortly. We cannot pretend to have done more than familiarise our readers with some of the most important arguments that its supporters use in our present issue. Even so, this is a necessary starting point for future work to be done.

Mauro Volpe: Bonapartism and the Capitalist State
