Note: We have chosen to call Greenland Nunarput, because it means their “land” (nuna) in Greenlandic, as opposed to “Kalaallit Nunaat” (Greenlanders’ Land), which is a translation of the colonists’ (Denmark’s) term for the country.
- Donald Trump has chosen his next target, Nunarput (Greenland). His talk of annexing Nunarput is a reality. The United States has just proven what the U.S. government is ready to do by kidnapping the Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, and taking control of their oil. Now Nunarput is in frame. In one of Trump’s latest interviews, he makes it quite clear: “We will get Greenland either the easy way or the hard way”.
- All anti-imperialists and socialists must unite to reject and fight Trump’s plans. Whether it’s the “easy way” or the “hard way.” The “easy way” is to persuade Denmark to relinquish sovereignty over Nunarput and force them to enter into some sort of association agreement with the United States. The “hard way” is a military occupation. We must reject and fight both these options. Nunarput is the Inuit’s and nothing should be imposed on them by military force or economic pressure. If there is to be negotiations, then Denmark must keep out.
- The US attack on Venezuela, and Trump’s clear statement that it is about controlling oil are an expression of yet another shift in the imperialist system. It is a shift away from the liberal “order” where imperialist wars were paper wrapped in phrases like “humanitarian intervention” or “exporting democracy”. Now, “might equals right” in this reinterpretation of the Don(Mon)roe doctrine. It is an expression of the fact that we are now in a period of a intense rivalry in the imperialist system, with the US and China as the major players, but where the EU, Russia and Israel and others are also involved. To try and assert themselves in their own regions.
- It is also in this context that we must understand the United States’ threats against Nunarput, which is rich in rare earth elements. When Trump’s talks about “security” he refers to the U.S. aiming to control Nunarput’s resources to compete with China in a crucial region where it is currently lagging behind. At the same time, Nunarput is also strategically well placed in relation to major trade routes, where climate change makes it possible to sail through the Bering Strait – even in the winter months. Therefore, the United States wants to rob a colony from another colonial power, in this case Denmark. Denmark has always treated Nunarput as a colony and since the end of World War II has been in colonial partnership with the United States, who have been allowed to build military bases in the country completely bypassing the Inuit.
- Therefore, socialists should not support one imperialist against another in this inter-imperialist rivalry. We should not, like the right wing, and unfortunately also socialist parties in the Danish Folketing (Parliament), call on the EU or NATO to intervene militarily in the conflict. Nor for the Danish military to be put on alert, ready to face a possible invasion. Denmark is part of the inter-imperialist rivalry and, together with the rest of the EU, wants to strengthen itself against the United States. That is why they say they stand together with Nunarput. Not because Denmark or the EU cares about the welfare of the Inuit, but because EU control of Nunarput can strengthen the EU vis-à-vis the United States. It is highly unlikely that Denmark or the EU will or can challenge U.S. military superiority, but they will still use the situation to pursue their rush to re-arm and try to match the US, even if control over Nunarput is lost. Even if, in the unlikely event that, Danish/EU protests or military resistance might force the US to abandon its plans, it would only mean that Nunarput would continue to be subject to Danish/EU imperialist domination.
- Socialists should, instead of cheering on this or that imperialist state or bloc, put our trust in completely different forces. The working class in the United States, Denmark and Europe as well as the Inuit’s own strength, unity and resistance. We support no imperialist block neither the United States, the EU (Denmark), China or Russia. They are all part of the imperialist system. On the contrary, we look to all ordinary workers who are victims of the rivalry of those in power. We look to their solidarity. Dockworkers have the power to prevent ships from leaving the ports. Workers in the military industry can strike. Workers in uniform can turn against their officers. The Danish working class can take action and support the Inuit’s right to determine their own future.
- For an independent Nunarput – break all ties with Denmark! Stop all threats against Nunarput
- It is the land of the Inuits and no one else, neither the United States nor Denmark!
- Workers of all countries – unite against the wars of imperialism!
- Build an anti-imperialist anti-war movement in Denmark – and globally!
